Sometimes I think when I talk about my makeup routine with people who don't often put on a full face of makeup, they look at me like I'm insane. Why would I put on all these various layers of product on my face, when they go underneath the makeup that everyone sees? What even is the point of that? My friends, there is so much purpose in a good primer. As someone with a semi oily skin type, primer is my godsend, and keeps me sane on long days. Who wouldn't want a more matte canvas to work with? Once I found out that primers were a thing, I don't think that I could go without them. They mattify, smooth my skin in preparation for foundation and concealers, and help makeup adhere much more efficiently than it can on its own. But primer has to be expensive right? Wrong.
If you head to the drugstore, almost all brands have some sort of primer that you can purchase. Head to a Sephora, and you can try out bunches of high end primers that promise to smooth your skin and change your makeup.
However, I chose a bit of a different approach.
I really love watching NikkieTutorials' videos on YouTube, and she swears by Nivea for Men Post Shave Balm in the sensitive formula. I was a bit dumbfounded, and horribly skeptical. The next trip I made to target, I tracked it down, and tossed it in my cart, hoping it would hold up to the standards that I had for it. In all honesty, I had never really primed before, other than a moisturizer. I checked out and headed home, really excited to try out my new product.
First thing, the size of the bottle is massive. Most high end primers will run you about $40 for a small tube. The 3.3 FL oz. bottle that I purchased was around $7. The smell is divine. Obviously it's a more masculine smell due to the fact that it's a product for men, but it smells so fresh, and the scent doesn't linger on the skin, which I love. When massaged into the skin, it has a cooling effect, and then becomes a bit tacky. The tackiness definitely helps the foundation and concealer adhere to the skin much better, and leaves my face smooth and ready to blend products into.
If you've never primed before and want to try, this would be my first suggestion. It's affordable, effective, and you get a lot of bang for your buck.
